How to become an actor? How to become a model? Those are the questions asked by people the world over. Many ponder, fewer take steps to achieving that goal or dream, even fewer take the right steps, and even fewer succeed. Why so? The performing arts and fashion industries, whilst on the surface glitzy and glamorous, are really quite tough and competitive, with thousands striving to ‘make it’.
Some people get lucky, get an early break such as being plucked off the street or from a local production, however this is rare. Most artists who make it have done so after years of dedication, training, craft refinement, practice and focus. Quite often the skills required are innate, that is, they are built inside you, and require varying levels of coaching to bring them to the surface, sometimes they are already on the surface!
There are many opportunities to get involved in the performing arts industry such as school drama and musicals, local theatre productions, student films at Universities, short and mid-length courses offered by industry professionals, and of course longer courses of study at tertiary institutions. None are right or wrong, they simply represent pathways or opportunities to get involved and develop your craft. Modelling is a little different as height and size dimensions apply (particularly for catwalk), along with specific training.
Whatever your interest, research well, meet with several agencies, particularly ‘real’ agencies that have been in the industry over the long term with a proven track record, and gather information about your suitability.
Naturally, enthusiasm and a good attitude are the best start in any arena, and this industry is no different. By developing acting and modelling skills you will also develop your concentration and observation skills, spontaneity, imagination, communication skills and self-confidence.
